Nitashia Johnson
Nitashia Johnson is a multidisciplinary artist, photographer, filmmaker, and educator based in North Texas. Her practice spans photography, photojournalism, filmmaking, mixed media, and traditional visual arts, incorporating ink, image transfer, and experimental approaches to image-making. Through these disciplines, she explores Black identity, community histories, representation, and lived experiences.
Johnson’s projects include The Beauty of South Dallas, The Self Publication Series, The Power of Black Stories, Capturing Black Stories, and Body & Earth. Through photography, publishing, film, and installation, she documents stories, challenges stereotypes, examines environmental justice, and preserves narratives that are often overlooked.
Her creative process is interconnected, with each discipline informing the next. Photography influences her filmmaking, photojournalism shapes her approach to documenting communities, and mixed media allows her to reinterpret images through material and process. This continual exchange expands the ways she communicates stories and experiences.
Beyond her artistic practice, Johnson founded The Smart Project, a youth arts education initiative supporting young artists through creative programming, mentorship, and access to artistic opportunities. Across her work, she is committed to visual storytelling, community representation, and creating space for stories that deserve to be seen, heard, and preserved.
